WOW!!! I know that Billy Crystal hosted the Academy Awards, but it looks like we'll never be able to watch an award show and have a good laugh. I put it on the Golden Globes the other night, and there are Tina and Amy talking about an issue that needs to be addrresed in the industry. AGAIN!!! So, bye bye Golden Globes. And let's say bye bye to Tina and Amy. Put your money where your mouth is girls.

Billy Crystal where are you???
Ughhhhh
Yeah, because nothing is as important as millionaires who have no clue what's going on in the real world need more validation! Let's all slap them on the back for a job well done giving us the complete crap selection of "movies" and tv we have now. These shows need to end, it's simply a bunch of arrogant millionaires pumping their own egos and patting themselves on the back for a job well done! Forget this garbage, turn OFF your tv and live a life based in REALITY.
I certainly did not expect a lot here, but what I got was even less
Here we got the Golden Globe Awards ceremony from 2021 and actually this one just aired the other night. I think it was unwatchably bad for the most part, but I will first talk a bit about the very basics and then do some random brainstorming about certain parts of the event that stayed a bit in the mind for me because I would not say this was an entirely forgettable show, but the bad news is that it was memorable for all the wrong reasons honestly. I will get to details later. First of all, it can be said that this one here ran for two hours and eight minutes approximately, but this is only the duration without commercial breaks. I don't want to discuss here what I consider the perfect running time of an awards show, but almost an hour of commercials for a show of three hours is absolutely unacceptable. Especially if, in-between, audiences are still constantly asked to give their money for a good cause, some anti-hunger charity or something. Doesn't matter really, always pretty funny though if the rich and mighty ask for money from the simple man. The hosts here were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, two of the most famous American female comedians for a long time and both have a really successful past, not only with their trademark shows 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation, but also with SNL of course which is part of their shared past. I will get to that show and how it played a role last night too a little later. As for Fey, I think she is really stunning for over 50. That's all the positive I can say. Her material as well as Poehler's were not good at all, so I was kinda glad that after the opening they were pretty much absent for almost the entire rest of the show. I did not miss them and in terms of comebacks of Golden Globe hosts, I definitely would have preferred Ricky Gervais. But he might be too edgy for them with the whole pandemic situation especially and some of his jokes could have outraged liberal Hollywood.
As for Fey and Poehler, they did as they were told. Would have been very easy to bring one of them in to the other's place instead of hosting the show from two different locations in America, but this was also just another social distancing statement. Also it would have been much cheaper and a much smaller endeavor logistically, but who cares. A much more obvious, verbal statement about this matter came from Angela Bassett it was I think. Always found her overrated and no idea what her purpose was last night. I don't think there really was one, except that she told us in her most dedicate and serious voice that all regulations linked to avoiding further spreding were top priority and no break happened whatsoever. Okay. Still with the basics though, the director here was Louis J. Horvitz, who has won no less than seven Emmys in the past. By far not the only Golden Globes ceremony he hosted and he is among the defining awards show hosts on the planet right now, so apparently he is so safe that he does not even have to get in the slightest bit of creativity and good quality here. Just dish out the politically correct approach and his career is still as safe as it was before. As safe as it gets really. Back to Fey, her opening was already difficult to stomach on two occasions, namely when she quickly mentioned how it's offensive that there are no Black voters in the official body and said the exact same again just minutes later. Of course, the issue at hand is important enough to do so, so it's all good. Well, I disagree. First of all, I don't like it when politics are always at the center at awards shows and second of all, isn't it equally offensive to not mention any other groups? How many Asians are there? How many Native Americans?
The first two awards of the night by the way made up for that. What did we get? Kaluuya winning the supporting actor trophy. Haven't seen his film, but I already found him overrated in Get Out and he should not have been nominated for an Oscar there. Besides, with last night, it's never a good category if Bill Murray is on the losing side. Same applies to a lesser extent to Leto and Sacha Baron Cohen. By the way, this win was announced by Laura Dern, whose recent Oscar/GG win was also not a good choice. Her dad is more talented. Her salute to the people in the audience, who all work in crucial jobs (another political statement) in the pandemic (and before) was also not easy to watch. The second win went to John Boyega. Cannot comment on that, but it was for a single episode I see and I doubt he was this good and it does not feel justified, especially with the Star Wars film shaving made very clear that Boyega is not the greatest actor. So it is pretty ridiculous to see him win a category in which people like the fabulous Brendan Gleeson are nominated. But I red about the plot from Boyega's project and now I understand. Utter awards bait really. A bit surprising this show did not win more. Oh, he also beat Sutherland and Parsons. I think that explains it even more, but at least Dan Levy did not win. I find him unwatchable and so fake and unfunny, but that is just my opinion of course. Had more respect for his dad, but that is also steadily declining and last night did not help at all. Speaking of Levy, Jane Levy has a new show? Did not know that, but I liked her on Suburgatory, so I will maybe check it out at some point.
Most of the categories found the expected winner. There were (at least) three major exceptions though and that would be all the female big screen categories. Maybe Rosamund Pike was the smallest surprise from the bunch because Bakalova was the only frontrunner there and she was perhaps still too unknown and maybe going for supporting would indeed have been the better choice for her. Pike's spitefully unfunny comment on Giuliani was very disgraceful there too, just as bad as her "I care a lot". Jodie Foster proves that she is still a powerhouse and very much loved as she is getting closer to 60. She had competition in little Helena Zengel from my country. Most people there guessed Seyfried, but Fincher's Mank ran empty altogether despute the many nominations and he almost must have felt disrespected when it was emphasized that there are three female nominees for Best Director. In my opinion, emphasizing one gender there feels sexist. Anyway, the third and probably biggest acting surprise was Andra Day's win over Viola Davis, Carey Mulligan and Frances McDormand. I would have been fine with the last two winning, Davis not so much. But we will see how the Oscars go. I think especially McDormand has a stedy chance to get her third with Nomadland now comfortably in the top spot for Best Picture. The SAGs are also still coming and I think Day has a tough road ahead of her if she really wants to achieve Oscar glory. If Pike can get in there, I doubt it and Jodie Foster's win also adds some spice to the Oscar race in a pretty open Supporting Actress category now. It could be her vs Bakalova there now and the praise the latter got from her lead Sacha Baron Cohen in the end will help her for sure. He makes it really difficult for me to like him with his anti-Giuliani and anti-Trump bullying.
So difficult to say what the weakest moment of the night was here, but it may have been the "it's good to be b(l)ack at the Globes" (or so) by one of the This Is Us guys. A lot more to pick from. Good moments were a rarity. I guess Poehler's line early on about The Trial of the Chicago 7 or Fey's about the guys in the audience being there, so the stars are safe were mildly funny and among the best to find. Also as a German I was surprised to see my folks being made fun of on two occasions. But honestly, with all that has been going on lately, I am not surprised anymore that the world sees us like this by now. A lot more sucked here, but what would you expect from an awards shhow that nominates James Corden for acting honestly. Oh yes, the two hosts also got in their SNL buddies again too. Kristen Wiig was not at the end for sure, but she was nowhere near as unwatchable as Maya Rudolph who is maybe by far the most unfunny woman in Hollywood. Everything about her little skit was a failure and that is why Poehler should have reacted in disbelief and not stupid jokes on incest. But if you find it funny how Rudolphe keeps uttering the word "crown", then there is no hope for you I'm afraid. This show was a big winner by the way taking home Best Drama Series and also three acting categories, even if none of them were huge surprises. Neither was the Nine Inch Nails win. They even defeated themselves.
Diane Warren may have another shot at Oscar glory with her Laura Pausini song for the Sophia Loren comeback movie. The little kids tribute to honor the late Chadwick Boseman felt also pretty forced. I really doubt they all knew he was in Black Panther, but they told them what to say and lack of authenticity is the last thing Boseman and his family deserve. Chloé Zhao is one of the best wins of the night, don't mind Sudeikis either, even if I'm not a fan. But his outfit rocked. Anthony Anderson I used to like years ago, but not anymore. He does not look too healthy either. Catherine Zeta-Jones could have aged more gracefully too. Minari is another solid winner, but won't be at the Oscars, so Denmark stays the favorite. With the Schitt's Creek awards, I am not too happy, but at least not one for the younger Levy's acting. I also did not like it at all how they showed the upcoming nominees before the commercial breaks. So cringeworthy also how we hear them. felt a bit bad for Pacino there. Such a legend and involved in this travesty. Big props to everybody who refused to air from their living room. Like Dev Patel for example. Oh, I must mention Mark Ruffalo. Liked him early in his career, but now not one bit anymore. His talk about godly lights of decency and hideous dark storms was a gigantic abomination. The other nominees should have left. Just like I wanted to leave too. That's all.
